HABITAT: Kiva sandy loam soil on old beach dune, gently sloping E side of N-S low ridge. Rich Acer saccharum-Fagus grandifolia forest w/ Betula papyrifera & Fraxinus americana (no coniferous trees); shrubs & saplings (Taxus candadensis,Ostrya virginiana, Prunus virginiana, Fraxinus americana) all infreq.; groundlayer asso. typical for the community:Adiantum pedatum, Maianthemum canadense, Trillium grandiflorum, Smilacina racemosa, Caulophyllum thalictroides, Acteae pachypoda, Thalictrum dioicum, Viola pubescens var. scabri,Aster macrophyllus,Solidago flixicaulis + several spp. Carex, all asso. of one another [C. deweyana, C. rosea (C. covoluta), C. communis C. arctata, C. hitchcockiana, C. sparganioides, C. platyphylla. Few pls. open, most still in bud. Fls. 18-23mm in dia., sepals green w/ dark green midrib & purple margins. 2 upper petals light dull rose-green w/ green midrib as is tip & outside of "cup" of lower lip, the "cup" dark rusty red to < > black-brown & shiny within. Pollinia 2, ea. easily split into 2 parts, all easily fragmented into floury (farinose) pollen grains. Population here for 2-3 yrs. Abundant, with 1-5 plants per clump. Sheet 1 of 2
